Fall on the Wasatch Front
Bison on the island, pumpkin patches, and the first holiday markets. Here’s what’s worth your weekends from now into November.
|
|
Hi there,
Fall might be my favorite season to live here. The air turns crisp, the mountains put on a show, and every town from Ogden to Salt Lake seems to have something going on. I pulled together a few of my favorites below, plus a soup that’s been on repeat at our house and one home task you’ll want to handle before the hard freezes settle in.

Roasted Butternut Squash & Apple Soup
Serves 6 | About 1 hour, mostly hands-off
|
Ingredients
1 medium butternut squash (about 3 lb), peeled and cubed 2 tart apples, cored and chopped 1 yellow onion, chopped 3 garlic cloves 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp salt, ½ tsp pepper ½ tsp cinnamon, ¼ tsp nutmeg, pinch of cayenne 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth ½ cup heavy cream or coconut milk 1 tbsp maple syrup (optional) To serve: toasted pepitas, fresh sage, a swirl of cream
|
Steps
1. Heat the oven to 425°F. Toss the squash, apples, onion, and garlic with olive oil, salt, and pepper on a sheet pan.
2. Roast 30 to 35 minutes, until soft and caramelized at the edges.
3. Move everything to a pot with the broth and spices. Simmer 10 minutes.
4. Blend until silky with an immersion blender (or carefully, in batches).
5. Stir in the cream and maple, taste for salt, and top with pepitas and sage.
|
Tip: it freezes beautifully. Make a double batch and you’ve got dinner on a busy November night.
|
Home tip: winterize your sprinklers before the first hard freeze
A single freezing night can crack a backflow preventer or split a line, and you won’t find out until you turn the water on in spring. If you haven’t done this yet, now is the time. Freezing nights are arriving along the Wasatch Front.
1. Shut off the water supply to your sprinkler system. 2. Have the lines blown out with compressed air. Most homeowners hire this out, and schedules fill fast. 3. Wrap or cover the backflow preventer. 4. Disconnect garden hoses and shut off the indoor valves to your outdoor spigots.

A little personal news: pura vida
In September I traded the Wasatch for the rainforest. We spent time in Chachagua, Costa Rica, a lush, quiet corner of rainforest just outside La Fortuna, during the green season. That means misty mornings, warm afternoon rain, and a shade of green I didn’t know existed.
A few favorite moments: falling asleep to the sound of rain on the canopy, waking up to the jungle already wide awake, and hearing “pura vida” used for everything from hello to thank you to no worries.
I came home rested and with a new appreciation for a house that feels like a retreat. That’s the feeling I love helping my clients find, whether it’s a mountain view in Morgan or a quiet street in Kaysville.
